FAQ Friday: Construction

Today’s question is…
What’s your favourite part of making a costume?

whats your favorite part of construction

The beginning and the end.
Haha, no, really!
The beginning is so exciting. I love gathering up reference pictures and sourcing materials and wigs and shoes. I love mulling over how I’m going to tackle it in my head. I probably spend more time at work thinking about costume construction than I ever do on actual work.

My cheap little Target mirror is not wide enough! Doing a test fit.Kelldar.com | My Facebook Page | Tumblr | Instagram

The end is the best, though, whenever you’ve got everything pretty much done and you get to try it on for the first time. There’s nothing like that, it’s so exciting.
Everything else in the middle is a pain, haha.

My favourite materials to work with are pretty things like chiffon and velvet. Yeah they can be slippery and annoying to work with, but I love them and want to be ensconced in them.
(Why can’t I find a gif of George Constanza talking about being ensconced in velvet?)

Look all finished!Just kidding. Got my blue silk velvet in and draped it around the dressform with my red velvet to see how they were looking together.Kelldar.com | My Facebook Page | Tumblr | Instagram
(there it’s finished!)

I love dying fabric. It’s terrifying and gratifying at the same time.

this is from a while back when I was dyeing the ruffles. forgot to upload it. LOL

I hate cutting patterns but then having all the pieces pinned together is really kind of your first look at the costume coming together.

One very wrinkley skirt and an unfinished corset on the dressform. We are hopping around house-sitting and I'm dragging my projects along with me, so it's gotten very wrinkled! The corset is just basically put together at this point- got the skirt panels sewn up!Kelldar.com | My Facebook Page | Tumblr | Instagram

I hate wig styling.

I like hemming and top-stitching and ironing. All of those things make everything look nice and neat and thus make me feel very accomplished.

I love beading and embroidery. Little things I can sit on the couch or in the car and do mindless-ly.

Thanks to being sick for a few days I got a LOT of beading done on this dress.kelldar.com/portfolio/donna-noble-runaway-brideKelldar.com | My Facebook Page | Tumblr | Instagram

Lastly I especially love the rush of brain-storming with my husband on how to make or fix something. Sometimes it can be stressful but I really love feeling like a team with him 🙂
